My goal in each session is to guide and help the client with what they need. I want to work with you. We will work together whether you have set accomplishments for yourself or if it changes every session. I want to make sure that you are getting the help that you need. I am focused on meeting you where you are at. It is my belief that you need to be heard, validated and take charge of what you decide you need to work on. I believe that sessions should flow based on what comes up in life and during the process. I believe that formal, strict adherence to one path towards healing can be limited, invalidating and oftentimes ignores the needs at that moment. I consider my job to provide a space for the client in which I can support them.

My name is Margaret Bird. I am trained in expressive therapies, somatic experiencing and EMDR. I am a registered clinical counsellor with the B.C.A.C.C., a certified counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, and a certified play therapist with C.P.T.A.. As a busy professional, I understand how challenging life can be as we negotiate the many roles we play in life. Sometimes it helps to have someone listen to us, hear us, validate us, and offer new insights or coping and healing strategies. I have been in the counselling field for many years. I have engaged with individuals in remote communities, urban agencies, a residential treatment centre, and online. I work with men, women, children and adolescents from a client-centered, strength-based, attachment-focused, developmental, and trauma-informed perspective. My clients have presented with issues relating to trauma, addiction, grief and loss, parenting issues, relationship issues, and life transitions. I also work with counsellors experiencing trauma, burnout, vicarious trauma, or other systemic issues in the workplace. When working with clients, I strive to develop a therapeutic relationship in which clients feel safe and heard. We work together to identify the goals and tasks to address in the work. I am currently doctoral candidate through the Counsellor Education and Supervision Program, Counselling, at Oregon State University.

Looking forward to connecting with you

As a Registered Clinical Counsellor I use an integrative, holistic, and evidence-based approach to therapy.

I specialize in anxiety, depression, ADHD, complex trauma, grief and loss self-esteem issues, addictions, life transitions, as well as dysfunctional relationship and family dynamics. I work with individuals and couples.

My approach is informed by modalities such as CBT, DBT, Internal Family System, trauma informed sensorimotor psychotherapy, mindful awareness, and narrative therapy.

I believe individuals are the experts of their own experience so I work from a client-centred perspective where I pull from different therapy modalities based on what would work best for them.

My process includes identifying the presenting issue, understanding the areas of impact, exploring the history behind the issue, and then considering what success in this area would look like and finding ways to move in that direction. I believe in the importance of providing a safe, comfortable, and secure space for individuals to give voice and attention to the emotions that they may not feel comfortable sharing with others in their life.
